Therapy and treatment methods

Within the practice of Psychologist Groningen we work with different kinds of therapies, to insure we can offer customized therapy as much as possible. They are described shortly here. Gestalt therapy

Gestalt therapy is a specialized form of therapy that uses the experience of the here and now. Next to talking, physical techniques will also be used. In this way you won’t only talk about your problems, but really experience what you do and how to change that in the safe environment of the therapy room. Together with your therapist you decide which direction you want to go and how you want to get there. Gestalt therapy is in its core adjusted to you and that is why no treatment is the same. Through careful examination of what works for you and what you need, the possibility to work in a safe and challenging way opens up. You become more aware of what you are doing and will create new experiences to broaden your options so that you can make choices again and have a freer life.

Relationship therapy

Relationship therapy can be used to save the relationship, to end it or to investigate it. Different techniques will be used to discover what patterns came to be between you two and you can start to change that. We look at what’s needed from different perspectives. This could be a communication improvement, connecting (again) on an emotional level, to deal with an affair or to break up in a healthy way if that is better. You as a couple will be put to work, so that the therapist can guide you where it’s necessary and you can integrate it at home.

Insight giving therapy

Insight giving therapy is used to get a clearer picture of what the background of your problems look like. Which factors are there in your family of origin and life history that influence your complaints or cause them? Sometimes you discover with your therapist that heredity also plays a part. With these insights you can become aware of how your problems and powers originated and find a way for the future that you can fully believe in.

Integrated behavioural therapy

Talking about your problems and getting more insight is important and after that it’s your job to implement this in your daily life. By the use of integrated behavioural therapy, you investigate how you can carry out the changes that you want to make. You will do exercises and look with your therapist at what resistance you experience in this process and how you can deal with that. By doing and experiencing, you will be able to move ahead.

Goal of therapy

Regardless of which techniques will be used, the goal of each therapy is to put you as a human being on a path that you yourself have chosen for. To experience the freedom and certainty that you need to create your life in such a way that it becomes valuable to you. You get to choose what this has to look like, your psychologist will help you reach it.

The period of treatment

The period of treatment can vary between 1 and more than 20 sessions. How many sessions will take place is dependent on a number of factors. For example the seriousness and length of the complaints, the presence or absence of a social network, your own wishes, etcetera. We will discuss this in the intake and make an estimation together.
